Karolina Grzywnowicz is a visual artist, using interdisciplinary approach. Her practice is research based, making use of archival materials, interviews, oral history and bibliographic records. The methodology involves working with specialists across various disciplines e.g. botanists, soil researchers, hydrologists. Her works deal with plants in social and political context, often of a violent nature. She perceives landscapes as a living archive in which traces of past events are recorded. She is looking for parallels between historical events and contemporary social and political discourses driven by urgent issues of violence, exile and migration. Her approach is characterised by empathy and radical care, which manifests itself in attentive listening to the silenced voices. She is interested in the practices of weak resistance, everyday activities, seemingly unnoticed gestures that have the power to resist oppression. She works in various media: installations, sculptures, sound installations; she creates situations and art interventions. She graduated from Jagiellonian University, the Faculty of Comparative Literature. She lives and works in Berlin.
